I love the blanket stitch (also known as the buttonhole stitch). I tried it for the first time during the 2021 project and I've loved it ever since. I used it a lot in 2022, creating an entire "neighborhood" out of the stitch. I also learned the buttonhole wheel version for last year's June piece.
When I was learning about the threaded stacked back stitch earlier this month, I bought a book that was mentioned by Kathleen Sundby in the video I used to learn the stitch. Creative Stitches for Contemporary Embroidery is a great resource for variations on foundation stitches. I had no idea there were so many variations for the blanket stitch and I had no idea I had already done one of them, the battlement stitch. A battlement is basically a series of stitches of the same type that create a pattern similar to the top of a battlement, which is how the stitch got its name. I did a version of this in 2022 and didn't even know.
I decided to try it out again this week. I had a weird and busy week, so I wanted something I would be able to manage with everything I had going on this week. I could do buttonhole battlement pieces every day and never get tired of it. I tried to play with stitch height variation and spacing. I love using DMC Perle 5 for this stitch. If I do this again, I want to try it with a combination of Perle 5 and 8. It think it would create a cool effect and texture.
