I've wanted to try applique for a long time, not just as part of this project. Today seemed like a good day to try. Applique has a long history in needlework, with examples of leather applique found in ancient Egypt. It's basically the use of fabric sewn over fabric to create shapes and designs. It was originally used to help extend the life of worn clothing and other textiles, but eventually became a decorative form of needlework outside of the patching version (also referred to as patchwork). It's popular in quilting, wedding dresses, and banner work.
I also wanted to try out the blanket stitch, which is often used for applique work. I've learned 13 new stitches so far, and this is one I can see myself using more in the future. It's a pretty easy edging and decorative stitch, and is often used on the edge of blankets (so not just a clever name). Highly recommend learning this stitch if you don't already know it.
