I finally took my glass recycling to the glass recycling place. It has taken me almost a year to take it. I'm not proud of this; I should have taken it sooner so it wouldn't have been such a pain to bring all of the bottles and jars down to my car (three garbage bags full!). I am a lazy glass recycler. However, taking the glass in today meant I got to drive along the George Washington Parkway to get from Alexandria to my dentist appointment in Arlington. This was an excellent thing to do today. For those who have never driven along the GW Parkway, it's along the Potomac River and there are sections that feel very much like you're driving through a forest. When it's gloomy out, like today, it feels very secluded and dark. I forget how much I enjoy driving along the parkway. I don't have to very often, but it's always a treat. (Yes, I know many people have to drive it every day and it sucks, but I'm not one of them so I get to enjoy it.).
Anyway, as I was driving home from my dentist appointment, I decided today's stitch journal entry needed to be a tree or tree-like form. I loved making trees during last year's 365 project. There was my original Grandma Moses inspired tree, the traffic tree, and the entire week of trees I did in October that included a tree that lights up. Today's tree is very much in the Grandma Moses family of tree; sort of loose, sort of abstract. The technique is similar to the idea behind the long and short stitch, but isn't one. It's all straight stitches, added in different directions and lengths to create the shape of the tree. I used this same technique when I made Keely last year too. I used way too much thread today, but it was worth it.
This week's recap:
July 3: cast-on stitch in this way makes me think of catepillars. |
July 4: Hungarian chain stitch and regular chain stitch. I love this line of stitches so much. The detail on the Hungarian chain stitch isn't great in black thread, but I love the effect. |
July 5: I hope to layer more over this section. Started with some stem stitch and an unexpected twinkle stitch. |
July 6: tried long whipped back stitch - it sort of works, but it's as clean looking as whipped back stitch made with a more traditional stitch length. |
July 7: I had spirals on the brain when I went to bed the night before, so I had to make some spirals this week. |
July 8: I like this one better now than I did when I first stitched it. I found some more sequins when I finished sorting the 2021 ort jar. |
July 9: My weird little tree. Definitely used too much thread, but I don't care. If I run out of usable thread from the 2021 ort jar, I have at least two 2020 jars I can use. I don't think I'll run out of thread, but I have a contingency plan because I'm me and of course I do. |
Today is also the anniversary of the day I made the very first Scream. It's now a full series of twelve individual pieces. One of the projects I hope to complete this year is a full set of all twelve. Here's the very first one I made. I still have nine of the giveaway versions I made in 2020; message me if you'd like one.
