Today is Lou Reed's birthday; he would have been 79. Lou Reed, like David Bowie and Patti Smith, were musicians I "discovered" in my early teens. I was very into 1970s New York when I was twelve, and I was in love with the scene they were a part of. As you know, true love never dies. Reed also inspired my gloom scale; I discussed the Lou Reed Gloom a few weeks ago. I may still be in a bit of a LRG; it's hard to tell sometimes.
Originally, I was going to use a quote from Reed, but it really didn't sound like him, so I decided to go with this lyric instead. It's from the song "Magic and Loss (Summation)" from the 1992 album Magic and Loss. The album is about death, but more importantly, about we deal with death and loss. It's fitting these days, trying to figure out how to balance tremendous loss with having to go about the process of living and working.
The other quote I considered is at the very end of this interview with Reed from 2003. It's in the very last paragraph, and I wasn't really sure he said it until I read this article. It was a little too long for the space, so I went with a lyric instead.
