I don't know where this year has gone. I'm genuinely shocked that May starts tomorrow. I'm not complaining; I have a lot of fun things planned in the summer and fall, so the faster we get there the better. It just feels like time is speeding by and before we know it 2023 will be here. As my cat often reminds me, time is a construct.
April was a good month for the stitch journal. I kept adding more to Sky Neighborhood and the blanket stitch section. I hid stuff. I learned a new stitch and we moved left. I got my first Wordle in two guesses (I've done it three times this month). This week, I decided to call the expansion of Sky Neighborhood and the blanket stitch section Across the Universe, after my third favorite Beatles song (and the only one I really love that George Harrison didn't write). Across the Universe is a good name for the piece (maybe the whole piece) since it does expand across the fabric. The next fabric move will be to the right, and I'll continue connecting sections. The blanket stitch section really started something.
While I love making actual objects (especially bees, flowers, and whimsical creatures), I feel more at home with abstract embroidery. There's something so freeing and fun about creating unexpected shapes and patterns using mostly the back stitch. I'm excited to see where this goes.
Here's this week's recap:

April 27 - this inspired Across the Universe as the expanded section name |

April 29 - I call this entry "Who Loves the Sun," from the Velvet Underground song and Keely's adoration of the sun. He had a really good sun day yesterday. |

April 30 - added some stem stitch to the fish. It's technically a whipped stem stitch, but I didn't whip every stitch, so I don't know if that counts. |
WIP Update: I'm almost done with the final "sampler" for my new series focusing on the back of the fabric. I need to finish the blanket stitch on the last panel and then iron them all and label the stitches. I hope to finish that today and take better photos of the panels. I'll share them as a WIP post this weekend or early next week. Next up in this series: several abstract pieces using stitches in reverse.
I'm also looking forward to drawing a new piece inspired by a photo of a fallen tree in my friend Kelly's yard. The lower portion of the downed tree looks like a gigantic spider web, so I want to try to recreate it in thread. I have an ideal that involves tulle and a mix of realistic looking shapes (like tree branches) and more abstract forms to create the spider web. I don't know. It's in my head right now and I don't know how it's going to transfer into the world. More to come...
