No, I didn't get tickets to the surprise Foo Fighters show at the 9:30 Club tomorrow night. I tried, but it sold out just as I was trying to order my tickets. Sigh.
Anyway, today I thought I'd play along with the 30-day challenges I've been seeing some of my artist and Instagram friends doing the last few months. I haven't been inclined to fully commit to one of these challenges, but I like a few of the themes, so I'm adding them to this month and October for fun. Today's theme: playlists/music to make art to.
Listening to music when I embroider is one of my favorite things. I find the music helps me creatively, and I like having some type of background noise when I work. I tend to listen to music in one of two ways when I stitch: I open Apple Music and let the shuffle gods throw out whatever bizarre mix at me or I go through a series of specific CDs and albums that are my go-to embroidery soundtrack. And yes, I mean real CDs and records. I'm old school that way.
Today's post features my top 10 musicians for when I listen to CDs and records. These are in no particular order.
Erin's Embroidery Playlist #1
- Foo Fighters - I'm partial to Sonic Highways, In Your Honor, and Concrete and Gold. I did a FF piece back in January, and may do another one next month.
- PJ Harvey - specifically Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000)
- Patti Smith - I'll listen to anything Patti Smith makes, but I tend to listen to Horses, Easter, and Banga. The piece I made in March called Mosaic, was partially inspired by her song of the same name (on the Banga album).
- Mitski - I first heard a Mitski song in the delightful movie Hearts Beat Loud. The song was called "Your Best American Girl," and I immediately purchased the album it's on, Puberty 2. I've listened to this album at least once a week since (which was over a year ago). I love her follow-up, Be the Cowboy. Side note: If Target doesn't want people dancing in the nail polish aisle, they shouldn't play "Washing Machine Heart."
- David Bowie - I made a Bowie piece back in January, and have been trying to figure out another one. Maybe in December to close out the year. My favorite albums to listen to when embroidering are The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and The Next Day
- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were featured in two pieces in July; you can check them out here and here.
- Fleetwood Mac - In some alternate universe, my job is driving around listening to the Rumors album on repeat. And I mean, it's my job to drive around and listen to the album, not to be a delivery person or a truck driver or some other driving related job. It's my job to listen to this album in my car...because music sounds better in cars.
- Margo Price - My favorite Margo Price album is Midwest Farmer's Daughter. It's so good, and I stopped liking new country music in 1992. My favorite song is "Hands of Time," but I listen to the entire album whenever I can. Follow her on Twitter if you like fun and strong, creative women.
- Original Cast Albums - Specifically Rent (1996), A Chorus Line (1975), American Idiot (2010), Jesus Christ Superstar (1971 and the 1973 film soundtrack), Cabaret (1998), and Pippin (1972). Most of my favorite musicals were originally produced in the 1970s.
What do you like to listen to when you work on creative projects?
