A few weeks back, I added the eighth "Scream" to the series, Scream (Bingo). This one was inspired by people saying, "I didn't have (insert activity/thing) on my 2021 Bingo card." There have been a lot of things happen this year that I didn't have on 2021 Bingo card, but I think "shelter in place at a Washington Nationals game because there's a shooting" was definitely not on it at all. Last night, at the start of the bottom of the 6th inning, we could hear gunfire behind where we sit (my brother's tickets are near the 3rd baseline). At first, no one knew what was going on, and then people started running and trying to move down into the stadium or get to the concourse. The field was cleared, and the announcer finally asked everyone to stay inside the stadium and remain in their seats. We sheltered in place for 15 minutes, and were then told we could exit through the center and right field gates. Three people were injured, and police are looking for suspects.
As we were exiting, a group of guys in their 20s were walking near us, and one of them was angry. I'm going to call Padres since he was wearing a Padres jersey. He was yelling at his friends that his evening shouldn't be interrupted by this and that we shouldn't have to live like this. I wasn't surprised by this reaction. He gets to feel whatever he feels about the situation, but I couldn't help but wonder what Padres will actually do about it. Is this something that makes him think more about gun control and how he votes (if he votes) and how gun violence isn't just about guns, but about poverty, education, racism, and about 700 other things I'm not including? Or does Padres become another person who says, "well what do you expect from criminals in such a terrible city as Washington, DC?" Maybe he's already very involved in gun control activism, and I'm being a jerk, but my gut tells me no. I guess we live in a time when people only care about something when it impacts them directly. I don't think like that, but I guess there are a people who do.
Anyway, today was supposed to be another themed piece about airbrush t-shirts and sand dollars, but I'm not in the mood, so that will probably be tomorrow instead. I also get to feel what I feel, and honestly, the thing I keep coming back to is how many of the kids knew exactly what to do. I'm sorry we live in a world where kids grow up knowing what to do in this situation. And I'm sorry if this upsets anyone reading this, but here we are.
