As I shared yesterday, I'm in the middle of a virtual work event that's normally held in person. I ran a workshop yesterday about being strengths focused at work. I'm a pretty structured person; I like to plan and organize things. This is a pretty great trait to have in my line of work, but I also know that I can be too rigid sometimes. I'm not spontaneous. I was thinking about that again during today's sessions and after my debrief with my boss. I was a lot less stressed during this event this year despite the fact that I had to convert everything to a virtual experience. Not having to manage catering and conference rooms and other in-person logistics let me focus on delivering an excellent event with solid content. I was also able to step back and realize I can only control so much. I don't need to hand hold so much. I can let go and the event will still be what it needs to be.
Today's piece is a version of free form embroidery. Free form embroidery is exactly what it sounds like: there is no design or plan. Sometimes, actual shapes and objects appear. Other times, it's whatever the artist decides it's going to be. I've never done a free form piece. When I do abstract pieces, I still design them. There's planning involved. That's not the case today. I have a bunch of Sublime Stitching threads that are almost gone, so I grabbed a bunch of those colors and decided to stitch whatever struck me. None of this was draw or predetermined. It was nice to just let it happen after a busy week of keeping time and staying on schedule.
I also discovered that I started February on the wrong side of the calendar grid, so instead of seven days each week, there are four. Please observe a four-day work week from now on.
