Today was day two of a three-day virtual event I'm managing at work. One of today's sessions focused on leadership qualities. The group was challenged to come up with qualities they want to exhibit as a leader, but also qualities they want their leaders to possess. The first group to present used the word "learnable" as one of their qualities. They prefaced it by saying they weren't sure "learnable" was a word (it is), and then proceeded to describe how they defined it. Learnable means "able to be learned," but their definition was more. It was a combination of being coachable and teachable, but also a coach and a teacher. It was about being curious, and inspiring curiosity in others. As we moved through the rest of the day, I observed many of them being "learnable," and being open to feedback, but also helping coach another person when needed. I also started thinking about my own learnability (which is also a word - mostly around user experience and how quickly a person can learn a product or interface) when it comes to work and being a good manager, and life and stuff (I am very eloquent).
A big part of why I started this project was my desire to see what I can do and learn. I'm learning new stitches and skills, like refining my drawing skills. I'm learning how to be patient with myself if an idea isn't coming or I can't get the design right. I'm learning new versions of time management. And I'm learning not to be humble when I tell people about what I'm doing. This takes time, vision, and talent. I'm allowed to be proud of what I'm doing. I'm also learning from others, and being inspired by their work. I follow a lot of fellow artists and relevant hashtags on Instagram, and it is a revelation. Seeing the talent and creativity of others is a huge part of learning and growth.
Hope you find yourself being "learnable" this week!
