The Cup of Fortunes: Week 25 (June 15-21)

It's been raining a lot over the past few weeks. The storms have been intense and destructive, causing power outages and lots of property damage and unsafe driving conditions due to downed trees and power lines. I've lived in Northern Virginia a long time, and I don't remember storms like this so early in the summer months. That's probably a conversation for another time.

These are also the kinds of storms that happen when it's really hot all day and they hit before the sun sets, so that means the conditions are favorable for rainbows. I saw two this week and was very happy to see them.

Apparently this one was a double rainbow when it first appeared. I saw it as it was fading and missed the double ring.

I saw this one on the way home from a winery day with my family. At the winery, lightning struck one of their solar panels and the power it went out. They had to call the fire department too. Wild.

This week and next week are one fortune weeks. I have a lot going on in June, and it's better for me to plan one fortune weeks so I don't stress about getting things done. This was a good fortune. I can see beginnings being the hardest part of something new. It's scary, it's unpredictable, it's uncomfortable. I feel like my little plants are a good reminder of this. I've never really had much success with plants in the past, but my friend Grace gave me a spider plant three years ago, and it's been "let's buy this plant" and "let's try growing lettuce" ever since. I had to get over my fear of killing Elton John the Plant in order to embrace my future as a plant lady. Elton John the Plant is doing well; I even re-potted him a few months ago so he can grow even more. Beginnings are weird, but also exciting. And occasionally they lead to growing tomatoes in your kitchen.

Here's this week's fortune and lucky numbers. It was a one fortune week.

Weeks 1-25

WIPs, New Plants, and Other Small Joys

I made a little progress on the vintage travel case makeover this week. I'm almost done with the new hinge piece. The original one I made was too heavy and it wouldn't stay glued down. I redid it and am going to switch to a different glue (E6000) for the rest of the project. My goal is to get the panels in today and let it dry overnight so I can do a final clean tomorrow. It should be operational by the end of the weekend. At least that's my goal. Let's see if I can make it happen.

I haven't started any other embroidery projects since I want to finish up the case first. I have several projects queued up for once the case is done. It's a mix of kits and originals. I'm also going to learn how to draw a raccoon so I can get started on my large canvas pieces. Perhaps the raccoon who lives in my parents' backyard can be the model for the raccoon that I'm embroidering. Just look at him!

The canvas works are large paintings I bought at Goodwill earlier in the year. The first canvas work I'm doing features a boat and I'm going to embroider a cat and a raccoon with a bag of treasures (mostly snacks) and call it "Let's Commit Crimes," since cats and raccoons commit lots of crimes. I'm also going to add sea creatures and sea plants. I have a vision...or something.

My parents got me a Garden Cube for my birthday and I got it (Loretta) and my Aerogarden (Dolly) set up again last Sunday. Loretta is growing tomatoes and Dolly is growing lettuce. The tomatoes have started to sprout! The lettuce will probably sprout tomorrow or Monday.

Look at these tomatoes! Look at them!

This week has been another random thrift finds week. I went to a few new to me stores on my way to other places or because I was early for something, and found some fun finds for the house, including a small Wedgwood vase, a ceramic cat someone's grandma made them in 1987, and a frog candle holder. Today I'm deep cleaning my house, so every item is coming off the mantle and bookcases and I'm going to reposition stuff to really maximize the little treasures I've been finding. A few of the items are probably haunted. It's really perfect.

I was recently gifted the absolute cutest little old lady item in my house and I found a spot for her in my studio this week. She's fantastic - thank you, Soozi!

My brother got me an Etsy gift card for my birthday and I purchased my first Merry Mushroom item with it. I found a napkin holder in good condition and am using it to hold mail. I really want Merry Mushroom canisters, but feel like I need to find them in the wild for it to really count. Look at this cute little napkin holder though! She's a delight.

This week was Keely's adoption anniversary. Our first few weeks together were a mix of sweet baby boy cat and demon cat, but we made it through and I was lucky enough to have 6 years with him. So many cute pictures came up in my Facebook memories this week. I picked a few to share. I miss him. This was my second election without him and my traditional post-election McDonald's meal was terrible. I guess I need to find a new tradition that isn't so connected to him. Hug your pets extra tight today and let them know I love them too.

I was at Michaels the other day and they've already put out some of the Halloween decorations (thank you, Michaels). I saw their disco ball cats and asked Keely if I needed one. Can you guess what he said?
