The Cup of Fortunes: Week 23 (June 1-7)

Happy Pride Month! I like to do at least one Pride themed piece each June. I did a quick rainbow piece on Sunday - it's super cute! The rainbow wood piece is from Modern Hoopla, a fantastic embroidery company based here in Virginia. I don't think they carry this design anymore, but you should definitely check out the frames and other goodies. I have another Pride design in mind, but I'm not sure I'll get to it this month.

If you're taking part in any parades, festivals, or other events this month, remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and don't talk to cops.

It's also my birthday month so I'm excited to celebrate my 46th year in the world. Since my birthday falls on a Wednesday this year (lame), I'm planning to take myself on a bookstore date after work and buy some new releases. I'm celebrating with family and friends various days this month. I also have a ton of stuff happening this month, so June is going to be busy. Embroidery will be my relaxation this month.

This was a two fortune week. I'm not a fan of the first fortune of the week. The second one is more my speed.

The first fortune of the week made me think about toxic resilience. I hate this notion that we have to constantly be ready for challenges and that every challenge is going to make us stronger and better. Rather than fixing structural or systemic issues that hurt people, we tell everyone to be more resilient. Sigh. We should take on challenges and want to try new things and be better BUT we also need time to rest and to be soft. In reality, the only challenges I really want to solve are how to befriend the neighborhood crows and what type of house I need if I want to adopt a domesticated raccoon. That's where I am in my life.

Because it's my birth month, I've been receiving lots of "it's your birthday" discount and freebie emails from stores and restaurants. So far, those have been the most exciting emails I've received. I'm not sure that's what this fortune is referring to, but I'll take the discounts and free stuff.

Here are this week's fortunes and lucky numbers:

Weeks 1-23

WIPs, the Travel Case, and Other Small Joys

I finished the first flower press piece! This was one created using flowers from the farmer's market and was my first attempt at pressing flowers with a hammer. I opted for a quote for this piece.

I think it turned out well. The next one in this series actually looked like a flower when I pressed the petals, so I'm thinking of doing something more in line with an actual flower. I may add some insects or define the flower more. We'll see.

I've made progress on the vintage travel case as well. I was in such a good spot a few weeks back when I made the pin cushion and the other pieces, but then I got to overthinking about messing the whole thing up and I stopped working on it. Well, I had a little chat with myself earlier this week and finally moved on to the other panels. They're all ready to glue to the inside of the case.

Two side panels

The floral flap piece will go behind the polka dot panel. Look how good it looks!

Next step: glue all the panels in. Then I'll do a final clean and it'll be ready to use. I think it looks good and I'm glad I picked these fabrics. They're so fun! I didn't do a pocket and I don't think it needs one. I may try to figure out if I can do a little tool holder, similar to what was in the original case, before I glue the panels in. That's a tomorrow challenge.

Some other fun things this week:

A new mug - Meowdy!

I repurposed a cat shaped cutting board as a decorative piece. The peonies and ghost look super cute.

I decided to use the medium mushroom canister to hold some large yarn that I'm going to be using for a project this summer. The canisters have some lead in them (I did a lead test last weekend), so I'm not planning on using them for food storage. I thought this was a fun way to use one of them. The large canister is holding my cookie cutters. I haven't figured out what to do with the small one yet. It may end up being purely decorative, which is 100% fine with me.

Lastly, the flower is blooming again! There are some new buds on the edible flower plant. Very exciting.
