The Cup of Fortunes: Week 15 (April 6-12)

I know I keep saying it, but I genuinely believe the Cup of Fortunes is telling me things. I'm sure someone who knows things about how the brain works will tell me that it's the power of suggestion or maybe it's one of the thing's Amanda Montell talks about in her fantastic book, The Age of Magical Overthinking, but I feel deeply that the cup is guiding things. Perhaps this is my way to find order in an otherwise chaotic universe.

Some people have religion. I have a cup of 84 (well, 62 after this week's fortune) fortunes guiding my way.

This week's fortune is another favorite.

What could the something special be? Was it the Hello Kitty bobblehead I picked up on Tuesday at the Nats game? Was it the new cherry blossom themed Metro card I had to buy after I lost my other Metro card at the same baseball game? Was it the gift of a quiet week at work?

Or could it be that my favorite New Orleans coffee shop is opening a location 5 minutes from my house? Yes, a PJs Coffee is going to be right down the street from me. This is so amazing. I dream about their iced mochas sometimes and they're going to be right here! Every day! Y'all...I don't even know.

I also still have today to see if something special comes my way. It's Record Store Day and I'm going to a few record stores to browse. I'm not particularly interested in the RSD releases, but am hoping to find some weird things to add to my collection like the album I found last Saturday while visiting Richmond. Or the fantastically odd indie rock tribute album to Neil Diamond that I picked up at Dearborn Music years ago. I listen to it at least once a week.

It's a complication album featuring an awesome list of women musicians and cover art by Andy Warhol. It was meant to raise funds for breast cancer research and treatment.

The back of the album has tips for taking care of yourself and the steps for doing a self-exam. The album is sealed but I'm pretty certain I'm going to open it this weekend and listen to it.

What do we think? What is the something special?

This week was a one fortune week. Here's the fortune and lucky numbers.

Weeks 1-15

WIPs, a Pygmy Hippo, and Other Moments of Joy

I haven't made a ton of progress on Scream 6 this week as I was a bit busy and a little tired. I'm hoping to work on it this weekend. I do like how it's coming together.

Last Saturday, after I wrote the recap post, I took a little day trip to Richmond to see Poppy, the baby pygmy hippo who was born in December. She's a chaotic little princess. I could have spent all day watching her and her mom, Iris, wander around their outdoor enclosure or float around their pool. She's just adorable. Her little ear wiggles...perfection. I think my favorite reaction to telling people I was going to see her was from my dermatologist (I had my annual skin cancer screening last Friday). She was telling me they all love Poppy and the other baby pygmy hippos because they're perfect examples of wonderfully moisturized skin! How funny is that?

If you're in Virginia or happen to be passing through and have time to go to Richmond, go see baby Poppy. It's so worth it.

We also stopped at a combo vintage store/record store and I found this lovely travel case. I need to do some work on the inside, but it's a great piece. I'm going to use it as a traveling embroidery kit.

As I mentioned, I did pick up a Hello Kitty bobblehead this week at a "theme night" at Nats Park. I should have known it was going to be a disappointment even though the Nats won. They try so hard to do fun theme nights, but they're always underwhelming. There was no real theme, just extra steps to buy the ticket and pick up the bobblehead, I guess at least I have a matching set now.

It was also so cold at the game. Why did I have to dress like it's October baseball in April? Sigh.

If you like brownies, I recommend the King Arthur mix. I added peanut butter chips and that was probably the best idea I had this week. 10/10 would make again.

I'll leave you with a short video of Poppy. You should save for whenever you need a little joy in your day.
