The Stitch Book: Week 43 (October 20-26)

Before we get into this week's piece, I have some sad news to share. We had to say goodbye to Keely last Saturday. Unfortunately, he pretty rapidly declined over the weekend and I needed to do what was best for him. He was surrounded by family at the end and he's at peace. I assume Pumpkin found him, smacked him on the nose to let him know who's boss, and they're sharing a sun patch and are cozy. Keely would have been 8 years old next month. I was planning on doing a piece for his birthday and will continue with that idea next month. It's been a long and quiet week, adjusting to him not being here. I think 4 pm is the hardest time of day. I've been going on a walk at that time, which is helping a little bit. I miss him. I wish we'd had longer together.

Do we think Keely would have wanted to dress up like a vampire or a ghost for Halloween? I was thinking about this last Saturday when I used this mug before the rest of the day happened. I think vampire.

This week's piece was originally going to include needle felted ghosts, but I didn't feel like making them. The ghosts were going to be part of the Beetlejuice piece, so I kept the larger theme and skipped the ghosts. Sandworms are super fun to make. I could make sandworms all day. I probably should have done the "marquee" shape first, but I was making this up as I went along this week after deciding not to make the ghosts. It's still fun and in the spirit of what I wanted to make this week.

Here's this week's piece:

Other Stuff from the Week and Some Halloween Movie Recommendations

I finished one of my kits from Capital Stitch Co, and started the second one. I'm planning on using both as Christmas tree ornaments this year.

I still need to iron and re-hoop it. I may paint the hoop as well.

I also worked on a few new project ideas this week. I have to start on the Bangor Polaroids and I'm thinking of using fortune cookies for next year's 365 stitch journal project. I also found a set of vintage mini postcards in a box this week. I want to do something with them as well.

Since Halloween is next week, I thought I'd share the movie list I'm working through leading up to Halloween night. I prefer old school creature features, campy movies, and lightly scary movies versus super scary or gore fests. I've been watching horror movies since I was around 10 or 11 so I've seen just about all the "classics," including all the slasher films and scary stuff like The Exorcist. I don't really need to revisit those movies much anymore, and I'm not a huge fan of the torture porn style that makes up so much of modern horror. I'm excited to check out the new Salem's Lot and have a few other newer movies and series saved on my various streaming lists, but probably won't get to them anytime soon. Enjoy what you enjoy...but please, someone else watch The Love Witch so we can discuss how unhinged it is (in the best way possible).

I included streaming information for those I'm watching on a specific platform. I have a small Halloween/horror movie collection on DVD, so most of what I'm watching is from my own collection.
  • October 24: The Love Witch (Peacock)
  • October 25: Christine (Peacock) and The Monster Squad (DVD)
  • October 26: The Mummy - 1932 and The Only Lovers Left Alive (both on DVD)
    • Note: If I'm watching The Mummy, it's either this version from 1932 or the 1999 Brendan Fraser movie. We shall never speak of the Tom Cruise version that did not need to be made.
  • October 27: The Wolf Man - 1941 (DVD)
  • October 28: The Bride of Frankenstein (DVD)
  • October 29: Salem's Lot (HBOMax - this is the version that just came out)
  • October 30: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (DVD)
  • October 31: The Worst Witch and Rocky Horror Picture Show (both on DVD)
Happy Halloween! I hope someone dresses their child up like Moo Deng and shares that picture with me. I really need to see babies as Moo Deng this year.

A few Keely pictures because I need to look at them at least once a day right now. These are some favorites of mine.
