Spring has allegedly sprung! It was not very springlike this week, so I think we're really experiencing "third winter" and last week's beautiful weather was "fake spring." My allergies and sinuses hate me, so here we are.
I'm also in the gray section of the Norbar fabric book, so this week was time to bring the spring. I have a bunch of fabric and trim from the upcycle craft store that I've been itching to use. This week's piece was inspired by some beautiful satin stitch detail on one of the settings in Judy Chicago's work The Dinner Party. I had the opportunity to see the piece in person for the first time back in December and it's amazing. Chicago worked with hundreds of artists on this piece, including needleworkers. I took so many pictures of random stitches and sections of the textiles featured in each of the place settings. There were so many intricate designs and I have a feeling more will inspire future pieces in this year's stitch journal. This particular detail is from the place setting for Trotula, an early woman doctor.
I used the satin stitch as inspiration for this week's piece. It features rolling hills (probably?) and more than once, I hummed songs from The Sound of Music while working on it. I need to work on my fabric piecing technique, but this was a good start. I added some French knots for flowers and couldn't pass up an excuse to use the sequin trim as the sky.
Here's this week's piece:
