This week I focused on some techniques to fill holes in jeans. I see these all the time on Instagram and embroidery and sewing groups I follow and have been wanting to try them forever. I don't wear jeans once they get holes in them; it's a look I absolutely cannot pull off. However, that doesn't keep me from wanting to see how these techniques work and look.
First up: using an old sock to fill in a hole. I have a very large sock collection. Target sells adorable socks for under $3 and I can't help myself whenever I go. If it has a dinosaur, cat, or woodland creature on it, I will be buying those socks. I also have a collection of mythical creatures like yetis and mermaids. I went through my sock collection to find some older ones to use for this project and came across this adorable little dinosaur.
The green fabric is a piece I picked up on my last visit to the upcycle craft store, Upcycle Creative Reuse Center. The finished piece looks fine, but if I were to do this again, I'd look for a larger design for the sock part. It was challenging to embroider that size item on the knew area of skinny jeans.
For the second hole, I used one of the upholstery sample pieces I got at Upcycle for the backing fabric. Originally, I was planning to embroider a tree, but decided to do vines and tiny flowers instead. I used the feather stitch for the vines and French knots for the flowers. This one was easier to stitch than the dinosaur and I could fully hoop this section since it was in a larger part of the leg. I would definitely do this again.
I thought it would take me the full week to complete both mending pieces, but it didn't so I jumped to the first pocket design today. I opted for a geometric design for this pocket. I used a stencil for the shapes and am planning on using five shades of purple for the design.
Here's this week's recap:

Finished version of the vines off the hoop. |
Prep for Pocket 1. |
Color palette for Pocket 1 |
Each color will be used four times. I'm going to use a variety of stitches for this piece as well. |
I'm not sure what the design for Pocket 2 will be. I'm thinking about something with cats, but I haven't decided yet. I may need to use the water soluble paper if I can't draw it free hand since other methods of transfer aren't going to work as well.
Other Projects and Crochet Progress
I've been practicing my crochet as well. I'll get better eventually. I have a little piece of practice crochet I want to try to fit into this last stitch journal but I'm not sure if it will work. I still have two weeks, so we'll see.
I'm also working on another beautiful kit from Laine Irene Designs. It's a gift so I don't want to spoil it, but here is one of my favorite parts so far: tiny flowers.
I've started working on the 2024 stitch journal project as well. I'm going to use a sample book I got at Upcycle as the base. It's upholstery fabric. I'm going to do weekly pieces and create a book. I haven't decided on the approach for next year, but I have a few ideas. More to come in the next two weeks.
Finally, enjoy a few photos of Keely and the funniest and truest magnet I've ever received.
