September: Week 4 - Grandness

Happy end of September! The final post of this month is coming to you all the way from Phoenix, AZ. I'm visiting my friend, Emily, her delightful pup Hazel, and celebrating my brother's 50th year on this planet. We were able to check off two items from his bucket list (I don't know if he calls it that): visiting the Grand Canyon and checking another baseball stadium off his list (go Diamondbacks).

As I wrap up this month, I'm struck by the, well, grandness of the Grand Canyon. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it can't be stressed how absolutely gorgeous and awe-inspiring it is in its grandness. Humans are mere specks of stuff compared to the vastness of nature. I shared some photos at the end of the post.

This month's piece is not particularly grand. Compared to the other eight months I've completed, it's a small piece, only taking up less than 10 inches of surface area on an entire cardigan sweater. I didn't set out to cover the entire sweater; that would have taken months to complete. I wanted to see what I could do in 30 days. This is what I could embroider in 30 days working only in French knots.

When I was embroidering in the airport on Wednesday, my brother asked me what this was. I told him it wasn't anything in particular and asked him what he saw. He said it looked like a banana slug. So that's what it is for him. What does it look like to you?

Here's this week's recap:

WIP Stars Hollow & Other Fun Stuff This Week

I've made some good progress on the Stars Hollow piece. I finished Luke's Diner, the gazebo, and made a dent in Doose's Market. I'll finish it up when I get home from my trip. I'm still trying to figure out what color to paint the hoop.

I love this little tree!

Obligatory Garland sibling selfie at a national park

We stopped in Flagstaff on the way back to Phoenix and had dinner at the Flagstaff Brewing Company on Historic Route 66.

The baseball game was a lot of fun. In keeping in the theme of grandness, Chase Field is grand. It seems much larger than other stadiums we've been too (I guess because of the retractable roof) and it was super fun. We were near a bunch of Astros fans and it was a lot. I'm thinking of starting a new series called "Old Lady Baseball Rules."

Their slogan right now is "Create Chaos," which is amazing. I've decided it's my new life motto.

It's a churro dog - a churro on top of a donut covered with frozen yogurt, whipped cream, and chocolate and caramel sauces. It's delicious.

Last obligatory Garland selfie at a sporting event of the baseball season.

Emily only goes to baseball with us. I don't know how this works out.

Please enjoy a few photos of Hazel. She's obsessed with my brother. Don't tell Keely.
