September: Week 1 - Always carry a sweater

Whenever people ask me to share a piece of advice, my go-to response is "always carry a sweater." Sure, I could be more profound, but sometimes advice needs to be practical and having a sweater is always a good idea.

September was always going to be the sweater month for this year's stitch journal project. Originally, I was going to use my favorite sweater of all time, my pineapple sweater. I love this sweater so much, but it has seen better days. It was one of the first pieces of clothing I bought in my 30s that just felt right. I don't know how else to explain it. When it came time to start thinking about the design for September, I decided not to use it. I still want to make something with the pineapple sweater, but don't know that thing is right now. I picked another "has seen better days" sweater to use instead. It's the only knit item I'll be using and it's so orange. Orange is my favorite color.

I also decided to work only in French knots this month. Did I create a smart design using French knots and strategically placing colors to create a beautiful effect on the back of this sweater. No, I did not. Did I just start stitching and decide it will all work out as it's supposed to by September 30? Yes, that's exactly what I did.

I have no idea what this will look like in the end. So far, I've created a flower like shape, a sea horse like shape that may also have a slide attached to it or is peeing (now you can't unsee that), and an unintentional whale that doesn't really look like a whale anymore. This month is going to be something. Yes, it will be something.

I'm only using DMC Perle 5 for this piece. I was using some wool crewel thread I bought at the upcycle craft store, but I'm not sure I'm going to use it again. It's unruly in a way I don't really want to deal with this month.

Other Projects and Fun Stuff

I finished the Coraline tote bag last weekend! I think it turned out really well and am excited to send it off to its owner next week.

I made a small amount of progress on my PopLush fish pattern. I really need to finish these two designs so I can start working on my fall themed project (more to come in an upcoming post). I also want to start learning to crochet this fall and have some original pieces to work on as well. However, I promised myself I would finish a piece before starting something new, so these have to get done this week.

I'm also planning on decorating for Halloween this weekend. I got my Ghostie Nuggets from Wild Rainbow earlier this week and I can't wait to see them with all my other pumpkins and cats and crows. I have a lot of pieces from Wild Rainbow and I will continue to buy more for myself and as gifts because they bring me so much joy.

Look at them hanging out with Elton John the Plant!
