The first line of a new project is always the hardest. This is particularly true when working on a piece that's completely freehand. I just have to start stitching. It's not necessarily going to look like anything at first, but it will eventually get there. This is something I learned with last year's stitch journal and I think it's made me a more confident artist when I have an idea about a piece.
Layering makes this piece work. Yes, it's the same set of stitches over and over again, but that's what makes it interesting in the end. I added two additional stitches to the mix this week: blanket and couching. They add more texture and life to the piece. I'm also working with DMC Perle thread in sizes 5 and 8. Perle is a single strand thread and has a rope-like appearance. I often use perle thread when I'm learning new stitches, particularly knots and more dimensional stitches because it's easier to control than divisible thread. Anyway, I thought it would look cool for the "bottom" of the sea.
I'll spend next week (Sunday-Saturday) adding more to the left side of the piece and then use the last two days of the month to add some extras to the bottom. I want to introduce the drizzle stitch and maybe a few other stitches to add some sea life to the piece. I'll see where the week takes me.

Iconic and Other Projects
I finished Iconic #20! This was the quote that inspired the full project. I'm planning a dedicated post next Saturday since the final recap of July won't happen until Monday. I still have to bind the book. I hope to get that done this weekend.
Rosie the Killer Robot got her hoop and I started the WORM pattern from Wolfratsen.
