June: Rainbows - Birthday

Technically my birthday is tomorrow, but for the sake of this post, we're celebrating today! I'm visiting family in Detroit this week, and had a chance to see my cousin's first gallery exhibition yesterday. If you live near Birmingham, MI, get yourself over to the Hill Gallery to see Lost & Found before it closes at the end of the month. It's a great show.

This week's organization is The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 and focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth and provides services and guidance for parents and educators. Having just one accepting adult in their life reduces the risk of suicide for an LGBTQ+ youth by 40%. When I got to a point in my life financially where I could start donating to organizations, the Trevor Project was one of the first organizations I gave to. I used to teach and I tried to be a teacher my students could come to if they needed to talk or needed help, but I know I didn't always do enough or say the right thing (at least that's how it felt in the moment). I wish I would have known about the Trevor Project when I was teaching, but now I can help others by supporting this organization. I started donating to them on my birthday and that's been my tradition ever since.

I'm enjoying my rainbow theme so far. It brings me joy like seeing a rainbow brings me joy.  This t-shirt is the worst kind of fabric to embroider on, but I'm making it work. It's not going to be the neatest thing in the world, but the colors make me happy. My goal is to finish the upper portion of the shirt within the next week. I have two ideas for the bottom half of the shirt: I'll either repeat the circle and oval patterns but on the opposite side or I'll create arcs from the top of the shirt to the hem in the same colors as I used at the top. I'm leaning toward the arcs, but I need more time to think about it.

Here's this week's recap:

June 4: chain stitch, tete de boeuf, french knots

June 5: woven wheel, whipped back stitch, buttonhole wheel, chain stitch, split stitch

June 6: whipped back stitch/back stitch, satin stitch, buttonhole wheel

June 7: buttonhole wheel, whipped running stitch, woven wheel

June 8: satin, tete de boeuf, stem stitch

June 9: buttonhole wheel, whipped back stitch, chain stitch

June 10: buttonhole wheel, French knots, back stitch

Iconic 1-15

The final five pieces in the series should be done by the end of June. Then I'll work on covering the book and binding everything. I'm planning a second series for the fall.

I hope that whatever you do today or this week or this month, it brings you joy. There's a lot going on in the world and finding even a small amount of joy can make it a little easier. I leave you with these words of wisdom:
