Month Six/Week Twenty-Six: Polite Menace

There's a lot I could talk about as the sixth month of this project wraps up, but for reasons I've decided to focus on Our Flag Means Death. I gifted myself a subscription to HBO Max and finally got a chance to watch the show. I love Taika Waititi's other movies and shows, particularly What We Do in the Shadows (co-created with Jemaine Clement) and Reservation Dogs (please watch this show if you haven't - several of the best episodes of tv last year were from this show) and I love pirates, so this was definitely going to be my jam. If you like delightful, unexpected romantic comedies, you should watch Our Flag Means Death. It's so wonderful and I can't decide what my favorite part is. It's not really a pirate show. Yes, they're portraying pirates, but the show is about relationships and a rare show about male relationships that doesn't feature George Clooney and Brad Pitt being very George Clooney and Brad Pitt. There's so much humanity and love and regret and fun. Can we have a long discussion about Mary's story line and how wonderful it is? Episode 9 features the most perfect use of the Lou Reed song "Perfect Day" I've ever experienced. None of us deserve Buttons. Taika Waititi should remain in full Blackbeard mode all the time. He's perfect.

I decided to end this month with a nod to Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, the polite menace. When I think about the emotions I've been feeling recently, I feel like polite menace is probably a good description.

This week's recap:

June 26: combo of back and stem stitches inspired by the sky from my day at the winery (the day before).

June 27: I started with some straight stitches and then added a layer of herringbone-like stitches on top. I love how this turned out.

June 28: I felt like embroidering some fishbone stitches, so I did some leaves or feathers. You can decide which.

June 29: I've been sorting the remaining thread in the 2021 ort jar and I've been finding lots of long threads. One of them was red and so I called this one my "anger line." It's never going to go away.

June 30: This is a combination of blanket and back stitches. I can't helps myself when it comes to the blanket stitch.

July 1: Some pink back and split stitches. I don't use the split stitch enough.

July 2: A tribute to Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate. I'm planning to make a larger version of this with more pirate-y lettering.
