One of the things I appreciate about my brother is his openness to adventure and going out of the way to do something fun. Back in 2018, we really wanted to see the Foo Fighters in concert, but they hadn't announced any shows in our area (they would eventually and those dates sold out immediately). They were on tour in support of Concrete & Gold, one of my favorite albums, and had rescheduled a series of shows in Tennessee and a few other states in that area of the country. When the tickets went on sale, we decided to plan a road trip and go see the Foo Fighters. We picked the Memphis show since neither of us had been there before. We got excellent seats and had a blast. I'm a big Elvis fan, so my brother treated me to a deluxe tour of Graceland as an early birthday present. You can read about our Memphis adventures here and here. The Foo Fighters show was one of my favorite concerts, easily in my top five favorite concerts ever. They're such a fun band to watch and you can feel their energy the second they walk on stage.
One of my favorite moments of the show was hearing Taylor Hawkins sing "Sunday Rain." It's my favorite song from Concrete & Gold and I love that he sings it. I remember listening to the album for the first time and realizing it was him singing (and Paul McCartney playing drums on the album version). It was unexpected and completely perfect. I've listened to this song lots of times. Hawkins died Friday night while on tour in South America. It's so unbelievably sad.
I decided that today and tomorrow's entries will be dedicated to him. I'm calling these entries Sunday Rain, Parts 1 and 2. You can see my previous Foo Fighters-inspired pieces here. If you need me for the rest of the weekend, I'll be listening to music and trying not to be too sad.
Originally, I had planned to end this week with a chain stitch combo entry, but that will have to wait.
March 20 - celebrating the first day of spring with some cherry blossoms and redbuds (satin stitch, French knots) |
Mach 21 - an ode to the sun (zig zag stitch) |
March 22 - Happy Birthday Yayoi Kusama! I used sequins for dots. |
March 23 - Adding to the fish section with some more French knots. |
March 24 - learned the rosette chain stitch - it's been popping up on my IG feed a lot lately. |
March 25 - I also learned the twisted chain stitch this week. Apparently, I should have learned this stitch before the rosette chain stitch. Oh well. |
March 26 - Sunday Rain, Part 1 - it's made up of three lyrics from the song. I'll finish the rest of the lyrics tomorrow. |
In other news, I finished Sheep Metal last weekend and the piece made its way to its new home. I'll share more about this in the March wrap-up on Thursday. I'll be starting a new project this week (probably).
I was talking with a friend this week and they asked if I was planning on taking requests for things during this year's project. I hadn't really thought about it given the different format of this year's 365 project. However, I think it could be fun to try to incorporate requests into the piece. If you have something you'd like for me to include in my stitch journal, send it my way. I can be a quote, a color, a shape, a new embroidery stitch (you know I love new stitches), a theme, or a section you'd like me to add more to. I'll do my best to incorporate any requests I get from now until the end of the project.
