I love holiday movies. I start watching them right after Thanksgiving and continue to watch some of them into the beginning of January. Throughout the last month of this project, I'm going to highlight several of my favorite holiday movies starting with my absolute favorite, The Holiday. I wrote about this movie several times on my older blog (you can read the posts here, here, and here), but I can talk and write about this movie all the time. Yes, I'm aware it's a movie about wealthy white people doing wealthy white people things around the holidays, but I identify so much with Kate Winslet that I give this movie a pass. It's charming and funny and sad and heartfelt.
One of my favorite characters in the movie is Arthur Abbott (the late Eli Wallach). He plays Iris's (Winslet) neighbor when she house swaps with Amanda (Cameron Diaz). He's a retired screenwriter and gives Iris one of the best pieces of advice she's ever received:
Arthur Abbott: Iris, in the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason you are behaving like the best friend.
Iris: You're so right. You're supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for god's sake! Arthur, I've been going to a therapist for three years, and she's never explained anything to me that well. That was brilliant. Brutal, but brilliant.
Today's piece is part of my favorite quote from this part of the movie. It's something I try to do in my own life; I'm the leading lady of my own life. And yes, I am watching The Holiday tonight.
