You only need two men in your life - Jesus and Jack. You get up with Jesus, and go to bed with Jack. Jack Daniels.
-Ms. Agnes, circa 1998
I can't remember the last time I had an Advent calendar in my house. Maybe 1990? It was probably something my mom bought and it may have included not so great candy. I really don't remember. Anyway, I have an Advent calendar this year (two if the other one I ordered arrives this evening as it's supposed to). Thanks to my friend's shopping trip to the DC Costco, I'm the proud owner to a Jack Daniels Advent calendar. It's pretty great. I'm splitting the contents with my brother, so we'll both have a nice collection of assorted Jack Daniels minis and some new shot glasses. Being an adult is awesome.
So what do this have to do with glitter? Not much unless I tell you a little more. Jack Daniels makes me think of my friend, Melanie. She and I met in college and have been friends ever since. We worked in the costume shop together, both at Loyola and at a theatre in town. We worked with an older woman named Ms. Agnes, who was fond of telling us that we only needed two men in our lives - Jesus and Jack Daniels. I don't know that I've ever drank Jack Daniels with Melanie, but I will forever connect her, Ms. Agnes, and Jack Daniels together in my memories. I've been thinking about Melanie since I started the Advent calendar AND today is her birthday.
Mel and I also share an affinity for glitter and all things glittery. A few weeks ago, I saw a meme on Facebook that reminded me of Mel, so I decided to turn it into a piece for her today. Maybe one day we'll be old ladies who impart this type of wisdom on the young women we know.
Happy Birthday, Mel! Love you lots and hope you're having an amazing day!!
