I've been putting off practicing the long and short stitch since June. I had to use the stitch for the first time when I did the Frida Kahlo embroidery portrait (the stitch is used for her lips). I had never done the stitch before and hated the way it looked. It's grown on me in the context of the pillow, but I've avoided the stitch ever since for no real reason except willfulness.
I didn't really like the stitch, but I didn't hate it either. I felt it was sort of unnecessary in this instance, but I'm not the artist so what do I know? Anyway, I committed to trying it again. I was going to try in June, but my birthday is in June and I subscribe to the idea that you shouldn't have to do things during your birth month that you don't want to do.
Here we are in November and there are less and less days for me to practice the stitch, so I'm doing it. It's meant to be used for large spaces where a satin stitch might not work or for animal fur, which is why I decided to try it out again today. Keely's birthday is on Monday, and I'm still trying to decide how I plan to stitch his fur. I'm not convinced the long and short stitch is the answer; I like what I tried last week much better for my little dude.
It's a relatively easy stitch to do and I do like the pattern and texture of the finished project. Maybe, like the French knot, I need to let this stitch sit a bit longer before I truly embrace it and bring it into my life.
