Last month, I tried out the Rhodes Butterfly stitch with some success. The stitch was created by Mary Rhodes and was included in her book Dictionary of Canvas Work Stitches. I purchased a used copy of the original printing of this book. Guess what? All the photos are in black and white. It's so weird. I'm not entirely sure how black and white images help with learning how to do some of these stitches, but it's still a cool book.
One of the stitches I wanted to explore was the cushion stitch (also called the Scottish or Scotch stitch). The cushion stitch creates squares and interesting geometric patterns depending on the variation you use. It's often used in cross stitch for borders, as fillers, and for samplers. My piece today isn't a real cushion stitch; my stitches aren't close enough together to form the close pattern of a cushion stitch, but the overall shape and direct is very similar. I was playing around with the stitch over the weekend, and liked this design I created. It's a cushion stitch in spirit!
