I went to see The Black Crowes in concert last Wednesday. Being the old lady that I am, going to a concert on a school night is a big deal. Add the pandemic to the mix, and it's just a whole thing. But I went, mostly because my brother really wanted to go, and he went with me to the HellaMega concert earlier this summer. I always want to be a trusted and good concert buddy.
I like The Black Crowes, but I don't know that I'd consider myself a fan, even casually. I know maybe five of their songs (meaning I know the song is a Black Crowes song). Chris Robinson is a delight to watch; he's a hippie/elf prince dancing around the stage like he's done since the band started. They put on a great show, so check them out if you get a chance. My favorite song of theirs is "Jealous Again" from the album Shake Your Money Maker. The album turned 30 last year, which is why they're on tour. They're playing the album in its entirety. And yes, 1990 was 30 years ago last year. I know; when I think of something that's 30 years old, I immediately think of something from the 1970s.
Anyway, whenever I'm at a concert and not particularly invested in the band, I tend to people watch or focus on the design elements of the stage and lighting. The last time I experienced this was when I went to an Indigo Girls concert a few years ago. I appreciate the music, sing along to the songs I know, and enjoy watching people who are very invested watch their favorite band. On Wednesday, I was really taken in by the lights. The band's set is an homage to the album art from Shake Your Money Maker, so it's set up to look like bar (the album features a casino), complete with a random bartender who hung out on stage all night. I really loved the hanging lights, and was trying to think of a way to capture them in embroidery. I don't think I completely did that with today's piece, but it's a good first attempt. I recently purchased some Pentel fabric pastel dye sticks, which I thought would work for making the purple/blue lights.

I like the idea of the piece, but I still need to work on the light effect. |
The dye sticks are fun, but work better on aida cloth than the cotton fabric I'm using for this month. I think they'll work well in my new art journal too. The dyes are permanent once heated. I think the heat also made the colors pop a bit more.
Sample pieces - I'm definitely going to use these on some aida cloth pieces in the future. |
I enjoyed making this piece. I used metallic thread, which I loathe, but managed to finish the French knots with one length of thread so I only had to thread a needle with metallic thread once. I consider this a major win.
Details:
Stitches: back stitch, whipped back stitch, French knots
Thread palette: DMC C310 (3 strands), DMC 310 (2 strands), SS 925 (6 strands)
Other materials: Pentel fabric dye sticks in pink and cobalt blue
