Y'all know I love dots, specifically polka dots. I haven't done a dot/polka dot themed piece in awhile, and today happens to be International Dot Day. I hadn't heard of International Dot Day until very recently when I was looking at one of those "random things to celebrate in September" lists. International Dot Day is based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The Dot is the story of a girl named Vashti who doesn't think she can draw. Her teacher encourages her to draw a dot and sign her name like an artist. He displays her dot in his office, and when she sees it the next time, it inspires her creativity and she begins to draw colorful dots and embraces herself as an artist. There are sequels too; Ish and Sky Color.
I love this story. I don't own a copy, but I've bought it for little kids in my life and I've read it to them, and it's such a lovely story about unleashing creativity and how our ideas can inspire others. When I read about Dot Day, I decided to create my own version for today's piece. I played around with a few ideas before settling on this one. It starts with one small dot, and then bursts into many dots of all shapes and sizes.
Everything starts with one "dot."
