Bouquet of Pencils

Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.
-You've Got Mail

You've Got Mail is the movie I will watch anytime it's on. I love it. I can't help myself. It inspired a fairly regular feature on my old blog called "Lazy Movie Weekend," where I'd watch a movie and tell you all sorts of fun things about it. Yes, You've Got Mail is completely unrealistic, but I don't care. It makes me happy, and that's really all matters. I would highly recommend reading 84, Charing Cross Road or watching the 1940 movie The Shop Around the Corner if you want to get really into this movie.

Today's piece is inspired by one of my favorite quotes from the movie. Joe, played by America's dad Tom Hanks, writes this in an email to Kathleen (Meg Ryan) at the very beginning of the movie. If you've never seen the movie, they're online friends in the early days of email and chat friends. They don't each others' real names, but use email and chat to connect (and fall in love). I love this quote because I love buying school supplies too. I would take a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils or my favorite Sharpie pens over roses any day.

I did try a bouquet of pencils, but didn't like it as much as I wanted to, although it's not terrible.
