Did a little free form embroidery today, and experimented with whether cassette tape ribbon is a good medium for French knots. It's not terrible, but it's probably not the best either. Originally, I was planning to do some embroidery over the ribbon with regular thread, but it didn't want to work, so I switched things up and went with this random French knot/back stitch combo. Two tips for cassette tape ribbon French knots: 
  1. Reinsert your needle a little further from where you bring your needle up through the fabric after you wrap your "thread" - it makes it easier to pull the ribbon through and make the knot.
  2. Be mindful of the ribbon on the back. You have to insert your needle around it rather than through it as you might do with actual thread. 



These two photos feature the best cassette tape ribbon French knots and an excellent example of how this "thread" doesn't always cooperate, but still looks fine in the context of the larger piece (see below).
