Humuhumunukunukuapua`a

There is a moment in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall where the bartender, Dwayne, is telling Peter about the fact that since he moved to Oahu, he can name over 200 fish. He's asked to name the state fish of Hawaii and he nails the delivery. It's one of my favorite parts of the movie.

The state fish of Hawaii is the humuhumunukunukuapua`a (reef triggerfish). The name translates to "triggerfish with a snout like a pig."

My parents moved to Hawaii the summer before my senior year in college. None of us had ever been to Hawaii, so you can imagine the excitement at the prospect of them living there and me and my brother getting to visit (I eventually moved there after I graduated). One of the very first things my dad wanted to do when we came for our first visit was to go to Hanauma Bay. I have a larger Hanaumu Bay post planned for either Friday or Saturday, so I won't steal its thunder. It was the first time I had ever gone snorkeling, and while I can't recall if I saw a humuhumunukunukuapua`a that day, I did learn about them and they're a big symbol in Hawaii. There's even a mention of them in the song "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua Hawaii."

Enjoy my take on the humuhumunukunukuapua`a, the first of three Hawaii themed posts for this week.
