I learned the fly stitch last summer when I made my first ever embroidered portrait. I used the Te Amo Frida pattern from Sublime Stitching for that project. I realized while working on the portrait, that I probably have done the fly stitch before, but never called it that and I probably wasn't doing it correctly.
Today's piece is a stitch study of a few different ways to do a fly stitch. It can be used as a filling stitch, for things like grass or leaves, or as a decorative stitch for edging. I saw a version of it in a random tutorial (that I cannot find again) that incorporated a whipped stitch as well. You know I love a whipped stitch, so I tried it today as well. I think the whipped stitch version looks like coral or a centipede. I'm planning some sea themed posts in July, and I think the fly stitch will come in handy.
