I really enjoy watching people paint or make resin art on Instagram. There are hundreds (probably thousands) of artists posting short videos or longer reels of their work. It's soothing to watch paint or resin being poured and then swirled or brushed into shapes. Of course, once I start scrolling through the videos, I find other artists to watch, like collage artists, and I've basically "lost" an entire evening to Instagram.
Today's piece is inspired by some of these artists, not anything in particular, but the way shapes just seem to appear. I kept seeing hexagons in a lot of the pieces, maybe because it's spring and everyone is thinking about bees (hexagons and honeycomb patterns). In the top line hexagons, I stitched the outline of the shape first to create natural connection points where the back stitches come together, and then I added the web patterns using those points. For the bottom ones, I didn't follow a specific pattern and I did the outline at the end to close the shape. It would be interesting to do this again and add a small shape or letter in the center of the hexagon and then stitch the webs over that. Something to try another time.
The back - like this view as well. |
Details:
Stitches: back stitch, straight stitch
Thread palette: Sublime Stitching 699 - this is one of the variegated threads from the Taffy collection. I haven't used these threads as much as I have DMC's variegated threads since the Sublime Stitching threads have longer sections of color than DMC. It makes the variation look a little different, but it worked really well for this piece.
