42

In the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the super computer, Deep Thought, is asked to calculate the answer to the ultimate question of "life, the universe, and everything." Deep Thought takes 7.5 million years to calculate this answer, and when revealed says, "But you're not going to like it."

The answer? 42.

And of course, no one is happy, but what do you expect to happen when you don't ask the ultimate question? Deep Thought then creates a special computer the size of a planet called "Earth" to answer the ultimate question, and if you've read the books or watched the movie, you know what the Vorgons did to Earth. I haven't read the books in years, but have a soft spot in my heart for the movie. Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin, the depressed robot, is one of my favorite things. Fans of the stories have pondered the meaning of 42 since the books were initially released, and there are references to it throughout the series. I even found an article on Forbes about the significance of 42. Fun fact from the article: the angle of a rainbow is always 42 degrees. Who knew?

Since today is my 42nd birthday, I decided to use some Hitchhiker references for today's piece. I don't know what the ultimate question is, but maybe in my 42nd year on Earth, I'll figure it out.

Orange is my favorite color.
