Experiments, Part 4

In my couching stitch post yesterday, I mentioned another stitch, the padded satin stitch. I've never done a padded satin stitch before, so I decided to try it out today. I have a few "larger" floral pieces rolling around in my brain, and I thought the padded satin stitch might make an interesting addition. I haven't really explored 3D stitches yet, and don't know that I will anytime soon. The padded satin stitch gives a little extra dimension without getting crazy technical. I'm also planning a few other insect pieces, including a lady bug, and I thought the padded satin stitch would be a fun stitch to try for a lady bug design.

The orange drop (canned mandarin is the specific color name) was done with 3 strands for all stitches. I used a split stitch for the outline and a chain stitch as the filler. The green drop (avocado) is a 3 and 6 strand combo; I used 6 strands for the outline and filling stitches (split and chain) and 3 strands for the satin stitch. I like the green drop better. It looks cleaner, and I think it's because a 3 strand split stitch never looks good to me even when executed perfectly. Even though you can't see it, it didn't make the outline as clear as the 6 strand version for the green drop. They look a bit like cocoons too. I haven't done a butterfly design yet, so maybe we'll see one in the next month or two as a follow up.
