A few weeks ago my friend Melanie sent a picture of Abita Chocolate Doberge beer to our group text. What magic is this? Where can I get it? Can someone mail me an actual doberge cake?
If you've never heard of doberge cake, well, I'm sorry for you. The cake is a New Orleans original, created by Beulah Levy Ledner in the 1930s. She adapted a traditional Dobos cake and created a cake that includes chocolate or lemon custard, cake, and buttercream frosting. Joe Gambino bought the recipe from Ledner in 1946, and Gambino's is the place for the original cake. It's delicious.
I was able to find the beer at a Total Wine and now my weekend plans include drinking chocolate doberge stout beer and dreaming about eating actual doberge cake. You can't say I don't lead an exciting life.
Today's piece is my ode to doberge cake. Mmmm, cake.
It really does taste like chocolate doberge cake! |
