My favorite sweater is a constellation patterned cardigan from the STEAM-themed clothing company, Svaha. It's casual, but work appropriate, and it has pockets. It's hard to tell it's stars at first glance, which I also really like. There's mystery to it. Anyway, I'm wearing said cardigan today and it inspired today's piece.
The random things I look up related to various pieces for this project is getting a little out of control. From waggle dancing to the color of the Brood X cicadas to the visibility of constellations to how to draw random things, my search history is something. I'd also be a really good general knowledge asset on a trivia team should the need arise. I was originally planning to use Orion for my constellation, but in checking its visibility this time of year, I learned that it's more of a winter constellation. Instead, I went with Centaurus, which is visible in May. Centaurus is one of the largest constellations and includes two of the brightest stars, including Alpha Centauri and includes the Omega Centauri, which is a swarm of stars. I love that image. It's said to be named for the mythical centaur, although there's debate as to which centaur the constellation actually depicts.
This was fun to do. It's a simple project, and can be completed in about 40 minutes if you include the bonus stars I added around the main shape of the constellation. A project like this one is a nice counterpoint to yesterday's negative space project - it's all about balance. I used thread from DMC Etoile line since etoile is the French word for star. It gives it a little something. The great thing about a design like this is you can use whatever thread you have. Easy.
Details:
Stitches: back stitch, twinkle stitch, French knots
Thread palette: DMC Etoile Blanc (3 and 6 strands), C798 (3 strands)
