What's with today today, or Happy Rex Manning Day

Happy Rex Manning Day! I hope you're enjoying this amazing day in your own Empire Records-y kind of way.

I love fandoms. The idea that a group of strangers can come together over something like a movie or a book or a band always makes happy. It gives me hope. When you find out someone likes that same thing you like, it's just the greatest feeling. I can only imagine what an event like Comic-Con must be like.

As I've been sharing the last few days, today is Rex Manning Day, one of the greatest made-up holidays ever. I've been celebrating in some form for years, mostly watching the movie with friends, baking cupcakes, and listening to the soundtrack. Last year, I watched the movie alone for the first time in I don't even know how many years. I was online messaging with my friends while watching, but it wasn't the same. This year, we were hoping we'd be able to get together in person to watch the movie, but we weren't sure how it would work. And then Anita had a marvelous idea.

A local movie theatre, University Mall Theatres, allows you to rent a movie theatre for a small group of people. A lot theatres have been doing this during the pandemic, but University Mall is a little different in that they'll let you bring your own movie to watch. Anita was able to secure us a 10 am time on April 8 to watch the movie in an actual theatre, something none of us has done before. I baked cupcakes, we bought stickers, I dressed up (#90sgirlforlife). We got popcorn and drinks (we ate the cupcakes in the parking lot), and had the best time. Watching Empire Records on the big screen was exactly what I needed. We all need a little joy these days, and this was exactly that.

Enjoy part three of my Empire Records series. I also included some photos from today's adventure. Thanks to Anita and Erin for celebrating - whatever will we do next year?

Yes, I took the day off of work. Yes, I really did dress up for this.

The shirt says "What's with today today?" I'm also wearing shorts for the first time since 2000; the tights/shorts combo were the height of 90s fashion (color is called Suffragette).
