There are 24 usable hours in a day

I love the movie Empire Records. It's one of those movies that I can watch over and over again and never get tired of watching. I know the entire movie by heart. I like to send quotes from the movie to friends randomly because I know they'll appreciate them. It's one of those movies I want the people in my life to appreciate/watch even if it isn't one of their favorite movies. This week is a very important week in the Empire Records fandom.

Yes, I'm talking about Rex Manning Day! It's the most important and completely made up holidays of all time.

We celebrate Rex Manning Day on April 8. If you've never watched the movie, the majority of the events unfold on this day. Rex Manning is a washed up pop star who comes to the store to promote a new album and sign autographs. A few years ago, people started celebrating Rex Manning Day because why wouldn't celebrate Rex Manning Day? I'm not going to tell you exactly how I'll be celebrating this year (more to come on the actual day), but I can tell you a screening of the movie will be happening and I have an outfit planned.

I decided to honor Empire Records with three pieces (maybe four) focused on some of my favorite quotes and characters. Today's piece focuses on a scene early in the movie where Gina (Renee Zellweger) and Corey (Liv Tyler) head to the store. Corey baked cupcakes and Gina asks when she had the time to bake. Corey's response:

My dad always said that there's 24 usable hours in a day.

True story, Corey's dad. As the designated "person who bakes" in the office and my friend group, I'm often asked this question, and I always respond with this quote.

I'm heading into my kitchen to bake cupcakes for Rex Manning Day. As I'm an organized baker, I like to make the cupcakes and let them sit overnight before frosting them. This allows them to cool completely, and means I only have to do one extra thing today instead of two. I'll decorate the cupcakes tomorrow.

Enjoy - and I hope you start planning your own Rex Manning Day celebrations!
