Freddy, there are two kinds of people in this world, and you ain't one of them.
-Dolly Parton as Jake in Rhinestone
Last night I watched a documentary on Hulu called Naughty Books. The film follows three writers, all women, who self-published their work and have been navigating the world of writing romance novels. The film includes interviews with other writers, fans, sociologists, and other people in the literary world talking about "naughty books." Romance novels, whether we're talking about historical romance or books like Fifty Shades of Grey, are always seen as "stuff women like" and are rarely taken seriously even when they're successful. Most of this has to do with the way in which we view female sexuality and morality. Even if you don't read these types of books, I recommend the film.
It got me thinking about a conversation I've had probably a hundred times in my life about guilty pleasures. I hate the concept of guilty pleasures. The idea that you should feel bad about liking something because it's not held in high regard is stupid. Why do we need to make people feel guilty for simply enjoying something? I wrote about this on my other blog too. Like what you like, y'all.
Not too long after I got my first vaccine shot, I ordered a copy of the movie Rhinestone. If ever there was a movie that would be considered a guilty pleasure, it's this one. It's probably one of the most ridiculous movies I've ever watched, and I've seen all the Sharknado movies and The Social Network. I love Rhinestone and for the longest time, you couldn't buy it for under $98. I don't know if Sylvester Stallone was like, "Dolly funded COVID vaccine research, I can help get an affordable Rhinestone DVD out there. I need to do my part." (Imagine his voice and mumbling.) I haven't watched it yet; I was saving it since I have tomorrow off and I thought it would be a fun way to start my long weekend.
So in honor of my viewing, today's piece features a quote from one of my favorite rock stars, Dave Grohl. Enjoy!
