I had something else written for today's piece. Earlier in the day, I was listening to some commentary on the Georgia runoff elections, and the phrase "a North Star for democracy" was used a few times to describe the historic victory of Rev. Raphael Warnock, and the presumptive victory of Jon Ossoff (now an actual victory). That image, of a guiding star helping us move forward as a nation, seems so perfect. Today also happens to be Epiphany, the day many Christians observe celebrating the visit of the Magi to baby Jesus. I spent a large portion of my life in Louisiana, and of course today marks the beginning of Carnival season. We can legally eat king cake now. Over my lunch break, I drew my star and started working on the border stitches.
And then I started getting texts from my mom and friends from around the country and IMs from my boss. Was I watching the news? Was I safe? The Capitol had been breached by a bunch of Trump rioters. Let's call them what they are: terrorists and rioters.
I have no words. I've lived in the DC area for over 16 years. This is the most bonkers thing I have ever seen. We are witnessing seditious behavior by citizens, spurred on by a treasonous President. That's not my opinion; that's the reality of what we're seeing. It's a dark day in American history and a dark day for democracy.
I decided to move forward with my piece. Now more than ever, we need a guiding star, something to move us away from this dark day. As President-Elect Joe Biden said today,
"Notwithstanding what I saw today and we're seeing today, I remain optimistic about the incredible opportunities. There has never been anything we can't do when we do it together. And this godawful display today was bringing home to every Republican and Democrat and independent in the nation that we must step up."
