My family moved to Louisiana when I was in the third grade. We lived across the lake, on the North Shore, in Slidell. My dad was stationed in New Orleans East, and my parents had friends in New Orleans. We spent a lot of time in New Orleans and the Quarter; I loved everything about the area. The history, the ghost stories, the music, the food - it's my favorite place in the world. Mardi Gras was my absolute favorite as a child. Parades! Marching bands! People watching! Beads! I feel like everyone who doesn't experience Mardi Gras as a child misses out of the pure magic and joy of the season.
When I returned to New Orleans for college, I admit Mardi Gras lost a lot of its allure. I enjoyed hanging out with my friends at parades, but seriously, adults do a lot to ruin the experience. Keep your tops on and stop being awful. Anyway, when I moved away from the city I started to miss Mardi Gras. I made my own king cakes, or ordered from one of the bakeries. I even went to the sad Mardi Gras parade that used to run in Clarendon. Two years ago, I joined a krewe and rode in my first parade. I'm no longer a member, and of course, Mardi Gras isn't happening as it normally does this year.
Earlier this week, one of my friends, who is literal Mardi Gras royalty, posted a photo of king cakes on Facebook. I decided to order a cake from Randazzo's. Once I ordered the cake, I planned an entire day around its arrival. I had king cake for breakfast. I'm wearing my "feed me king cake and tell me I'm pretty" shirt. I took down my Christmas tree. I decided today's piece would be inspired by king cake.
I'm not saying king cake makes everything better, but I'm not not saying that either.
I wanted to alternate the border colors, but didn't trust my ability to do it evenly one color at a time. So, I had three threads going at once. I've never done this before, but it worked perfectly. |
