It's January 31st!!! I've officially completed one whole month of daily embroidery pieces. It's been a good first month. I feel like I tried to vary up the designs and the stitches to keep things interesting. I did way more drawing than I anticipated and I LOVE it. That's been one of my favorite parts of this project so far: figuring out how to draw stuff. I'm not great, but I'm not terrible either. I only had to use patterns twice (both credited in the original post), so I'm feeling good about my ability to create original designs that don't suck. I mapped out February's calendar today; I'm going to stick with the same approach I used this month. Draw the full calendar in advance and fill in a square each day. It worked well, and it looks nicer than piecing everything together at the end. My biggest lesson learned from this month is to think about time more when I plan pieces, particularly during the week. I don't have infinite amounts of time during the week since I have to go to work, so I need to design with that in mind. Regardless of what the inspiration for the day is, I have to plan to get it done in less time than a weekend. The other thing: there was only one day where I wasn't sure what I was going to stitch, and then it just hit me so it all worked out. I think this part will get easier as the year goes on.
Today's piece is in celebration of one of my oldest and best friends, Anita. It's her birthday and this is the first birthday piece focused on someone I actually know. Anita and I met in the 7th grade, when my family moved to Virginia from Louisiana. We've been friends ever since. She's the best partner in crime, always up for an adventure or to hang out and watch Xanadu for the millionth time. A lot of my favorite memories of our 20+ year friendship (almost 30 years y'all) involve music and baseball (not necessarily together). We go on epic Record Store Day trips every year, and she has been a part of "Old Lady Concert Rules" since the first time I talked about them. We will get to go see live music again soon and we will get to hang out and listen to records again soon.
January is done! I hung the finished month in my studio; I probably need better materials for securing it to the wall, but this will do for now.
February will start with a salute to snow and Groundhog Day! We'll also celebrate Valentine's Day (inspired by one of my favorite memes ever) and Mardi Gras. Thanks for following along!!
