I started art journaling back in August. I subscribe to a kit through a company called Let's Make Art. Each month I get a box with a new journal, art supplies, and prompts and techniques to follow each week. Video tutorials (you can find them all on YouTube) guide me through each prompt, and the artist, Jesse Peterson, is just wonderful. In addition to the journals, each month there's a postcard included in the kit for the "Let's Make Art Matter" project. The postcard goes to someone who needs a little pick me up for whatever reason. November's card was about opening doors, and we had to draw a door using perspective. I had never done this before. When Jesse said we were going to draw a door, all I could think about was the part in Beetlejuice where Adam and Barbara decide to follow the guidance of The Handbook for the Recently Deceased and draw a door, which had nothing to do with the actual prompt, but the idea helped me complete my first door. Here's my completed postcard for reference:
I was proud of my postcard, and it inspired the first piece of this project - Opening the Door to 2021. I can't guarantee every day will have an actual title, but I figured we'd start off with a bang.
Details:
Stitches: I used a back stitch for this entire piece. The back stitch is the most foundational embroidery stitch; if you can back stitch, you can embroider. I love using a back stitch to fill larger spaces too.
Thread Palette: With the exception of the border, I used DMC Etoile Embroidery Thread. This particular type of thread has simmer thread in it, so it adds a bit of sparkle to embroidery pieces. I don't think photos ever do Etoile thread justice, but it's pretty and much easier to work with than metallic thread.
