Bill & Ted

My top five movie star crushes from my teen years are, in no particular order, Kiefer Sutherland, Emilio Estevez, Christian Slater, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Keanu Reeves. Yes, I'm aware that four of the five were in the Young Guns movies. I see no problem with this. In the last several months, I've re-watched movies from the era when I would have first started watching their movies, and I can honestly say, first movie loves never die. I'm also mildly obsessed with the Netflix movie Always Be My Maybe, which features one of my favorite Keanu Reeves performances in a very long time. I won't spoil it for you if you haven't see the movie yet. The release of the new Bill & Ted movie has only amped up my Keanu love. We don't really deserve Keanu Reeves

I loved Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure when I was younger. It was a sleepover staple, and probably one of the first times I ever saw George Carlin in a movie. Bill and Ted (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) go on a most excellent adventure and find out their band will be the foundation of a future perfect society. The sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, wasn't as good as the original, but does feature my fifth favorite KISS song. There was talk of a third movie over the years, and we finally got that movie in 2020. Bill & Ted Face the Music came out over the summer, and I finally watched it over the holidays. My brother got me the trilogy set for Christmas. The third movie brings us adult Bill and Ted, still trying to make Wyld Stallyns a thing, and now they have daughters. They haven't written the song that unites the world, and unless they do so quickly, the world will collapse. Adventures and hilarity ensue. It's not the greatest movie of all time, but it's a great end to the series, and more importantly, it was a great movie for 2020. At the end of the day, the movie is about the awesome power of music to unite us all.

In the first movie, Bill and Ted encourage everyone to "be excellent to each other." Even if we weren't entering another week that may possibly be very difficult, I think the idea of being excellent to each other is something we should all think about doing more of in 2021. I'm not suggesting we be excellent to insurrectionists, racists, or people who genuinely need to be held accountable for their actions; they deserve none of my energy or your energy and need to face consequences for their actions. For everyone else, we can be excellent to each other by wearing our masks, not being jerks about science and the reality of the election results, and being better about understanding that no one is really okay right now. If we want to be able to work on the hard things, we have to work on the small things. So as you start this week, the third week of the year (seriously feels like we're already a month or two in), consider being excellent to each other.

Details:
Stitches: back and straight stitches
Thread palette: DMC 3837, 741, C740, C550 (6 strands) Originally, I was going to do this piece in neon colors similar to the movie poster for the original movie, but I didn't like any of the neon thread options I have right now, so I went with an orange and purple palette instead. I'm not buying thread right now (I have so much), so I have to work with what I have.
